Daphnis
A very pastoral name for a very pastoral character: Daphnis is also the name of the shepherd said to have been the founder of pastoral poetry. This Daphnis was a foundling reared by Lamo. In love with Chloe and eventually revealed as the lost offspring of Dionysophanes.
Lamo
Goatherder. Father-figure to Daphnis.
Chloe
Discovered as an infant in the Cave of the Nymphs by Dryas. Another pastoral name: foliage or, perhaps more appropriate, “green young shoot.” In love with Daphnis and shares with him a noble parentage. She is the daughter of Megacles.
Dryas
Shepherd and father-figure to Chloe.
Dorco
Actively seeks to become a rival to Daphnis for the love of Chloe, but leans heavily toward the stalker side of the equation. Makes an attempt to kidnap Chloe, but is hindered by attacking dogs. Daphnis actually helps to save him under the illusion it was just a prank. Later he will return the favor by saving Chloe from pirates.
The Methymneans
Pirates who beat Daphnis and abduct Chloe.
Pan
The God of Shepherds and Flocks appears to the leader of the pirates in a dream after the abduction of Chloe with a warning to return her unharmed. For good meaure, he creates a series of spectacles designed to frighten the The Methymneans.
