Fundamentally, Daughter in Exile is a story of hope and the power of dreaming. The 21-year-old Lola is wildly successful. She is a college graduate, has a good apartment, and has a wonderful and fulfilling job. But she always hopes and dreams, including after she went to America with Armand, when it was hard to hope and dream. Hoping and dreaming, even in times of hardship and difficulty, is one of the most important things a person can do during difficult times.
It is also a story about the power of love. Even though she is living a seemingly perfect life, she wants more. Ultimately, Lola wants love. When she finds love, she grabs a hold of it quickly. And when the opportunity arises to follow Armand, her love, to the United States, she takes it. Even though she doesn't know much about the U.S. and doesn't know how she will survive in that new country, she doesn't care. She feels the power of love and will do anything to maintain her love with Armand, even if pursuing love brings her challenges. This shows the power and importance of love.
Despite her challenges living in America as an undocumented immigrant, Lola succeeds. And she succeeds in part because of her attitude. Even in difficult times, she has hope and perseverance. And even when she deals with racists and a lack of opportunities, she continues on, driven by her makeup, her mother, and her love for Armand. Because of that, Lola ultimately succeeds. She builds a life which anyone would be envious of with a man who she loves tremendously.
