The state of nature

Rousseau's descriptions of the state of nature are lyrical and peaceful, corresponding to the idea of natural man as happy and carefree. He begins his description of the state of nature by describing a vision before his eyes:

"I see him satisfying his hunger under an oak tree, quenching his thirst at the first stream, finding his bed at the foot of the same tree that supplied his meal."
