The title of "Araby" invokes exoticism. How does the exotic or foreign appear in these stories?
Foreignness plays a role in several of the stories read for Day 1. In "An Encounter," it is in the form of Westerns, who flagrantly exoticize and ostracize Native Americans. "An Encounter" also features nationalities and ethnicities marked as "others," including the "little Jew" on the ferry and the Norwegian sailors on the pier. The foreignness of the English and Protestants appears in both "An Encounter" and "Araby." In this case students should recognize that though the English are a foreign element, they are not exoticized. They should also consider how the exotic name "Araby"...
