Dylan Thomas: Poems Themes

Coming of age

The major theme in the poem entitled "Poem in October’’ is the idea of coming of age. The main character in the poem is the narrator who turned 13. He takes a walk, leaves the city where he lives and looks at the city from above. The weather changes from sunny to rainy in a matter of seconds, showing just how unpredictable life can be. The childhood period is described as being a fairytale and a dream, something the narrator can look at with fondness. The mother is present in those memories but in the adulthood period neither the mother nor the father were present. The adulthood period is characterized by the presence of rain and coldness, thus signaling how it is a much harsher period.

Remembering the past

The major theme in the poem "This is remembered’’ shows how a person’s mind functions. The narrator compiles a list of things a person remembers and the emphasis is put on the idea that we always forget the things that caused us most pain while the happy things in our life are easily forgotten. Another important thing highlighted is how we often forget most of our life and how from everything that happened to us, we are not able to remember not even half of our life.

The power of danger

In the poem "Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait’’, the narrator talks about the sailors and how they feel attracted by the sea. The sailors put their lives in danger every time they get out with their boats but they are not scared by this since they long for the feeling of adrenaline. Danger is describes in the poem as being a beautiful woman, capable of entrancing men and making them want to follow it, no matter the circumstances. The idea that danger has the power to attract people is a common theme in many other poems as well. Also because of this, safety is presented as being something a person should not desire and as being the characteristic of a weak person.
