East of Eden notably takes place in the Salinas Valley, where many of Steinbeck's novels take place, including Of Mice and Men, The Pastures of Heaven, and The Long Valley. Thematically, the novel focuses on working-class individuals, as is the case with many of his works following The Great Depression.
