Isabella (Bella) Marie Swan
Bella is the main character and protagonist, along with being the narrator of the novel. She was born September 13, 1987 to Charlie Swan and Renée Dwyer, though her parents are divorced. She moved from Phoenix, Arizona, where she lived with her mother, to Forks, Washington, to live with her father. She falls in love with Edward Cullen and rekindles her friendship with Jacob Black shortly after moving back to Forks. Even though she is in love with Edward, she is not willing to end her friendship with Jake. This causes tension between the three characters.
Edward Anthony Masen Cullen
Edward Cullen was born on June 20, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. His name was Edward Anthony Masen, Jr. He is a deuteragonist and a round character. He is conflicted between loving Bella and his nature. Edward is a telepathic vampire and founding member of the Olympic coven, which is lead by Carlisle Cullen. He is the adoptive son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen. His adoptive siblings are Emmett and Alice Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale. Near death during the Spanish influenza outbreak in 1918, Edward was turned by Carlisle, as the only alternative to his imminent death. Over the next 90 years, they gained more family members, all near death. By the end of Eclipse, he is engaged to Bella Swan.
Jacob Black
Jacob "Jake" Black is a protagonist and best friend to Bella. He is a member of the Quileute tribe and the wolf clan, as a part of Sam Uley's pack, where he is second-in-command (Beta). He first began shifting into a wolf in New Moon.
He is deeply in love with Bella, although she is in love with Edward. He becomes overconfident that Bella loves him over Edward, and frequently tries to push this mentality into her. He forcefully kisses her to try to prove this point. Later in the novel, Bella realizes that she does in fact love Jacob, but her love for Edward is stronger, which leads her to choose Edward over him. Although he is heartbroken at her choice, he must accept it and agrees to stop trying to come between them.
Charlie Swan
Charlie Swan is the father to Bella and the Chief of Police in Forks, Washington. Bella's mother, Renèe, left him when Bella was a child. In Twilight, Bella moves to Forks to live with Charlie. Charlie is shown to be very protective over her throughout the series, though very distrustful and skeptical of Edward Cullen. Charlie is also very scared of losing her and frets over her safety often. In Eclipse, he frequently tries to encourage her to spend time with her school friends and her friends from the Quileute tribe (namely Jacob) over Edward. He fears that she is spending a worrisome amount of time with the Cullens over other characters, and does his best to change that.
Carlisle Cullen
Carlisle Cullen is a minor character but significant to the plot. He is the founder and leader of the Olympic coven. He was born in 1640 in London, England. He is married to Esme Cullen. They are the adoptive parents of Emmett, Alice, Edward Cullen, and Jasper and Rosalie Hale. Carlisle's compassion allowed him to perfect his lifestyle as a "vegetarian" vampires, surviving only on animal blood. He practiced restraint to the point he is able to resist human blood entirely, working as a doctor. He believes he must give back (by working as a sought-after doctor) for the sins he committed (hunting vampires).
Esme Cullen
Born Esme Anne Platt in 1895, Esme married Charlie Evenson. She was changed by Carlisle after attempting suicide following the loss of her baby. She married Carlisle after her transformation. She is the adoptive mother of Alice, Emmett, Edward Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale. She is a minor character.
Alice Cullen
Alice is Edward's closest sibling. She has always supported Bella and Edward's relationship. Alice can see into the future and the Cullens use her gift to their advantage during the war against the newborn vampires.
Rosalie Lillian Hale
Rosalie is a minor character but dynamic. She begins by not supporting Bella's choice or liking her, to protecting her. She was born 1915 in Rochester, New York. She married Emmett Cullen, is the adoptive daughter of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, and the "sister" of Jasper Hale (they pretend to be twins). She was engaged to Royce King II. She was turned by Carlisle in 1933 after he found her on the brink of death following being raped and beaten by her fiancé and his friends.
Jasper Hale
Jasper was transformed into a Vampire by Maria, an older vampire to fight as soldier in her army of newborn vampires. He was vicious and ruthless, killing thousands of humans and vampires. Exhausted from the violence and killing, he ran away and met Alice who adopted him into the clan of Cullens. He still struggles with the his new 'vegetarian' diet as a part of the Cullen family.
As one of the best fighters in the coven, Jasper is the one to lead the strategy lessons given to Sam's pack to prepare them for their battle against Victoria.
Emmett Cullen
Emmett Cullen is a member of the Olympic coven. He is married to Rosalie and is the adoptive son of Carlisle and Esme. He was turned by Carlisle after Rosalie found him mauled by a bear. He goes on frequent hunting trips with the other men in the Olympic coven.
In Eclipse, he is confined to being a minor character. He helps Edward and Jacob track the intruder in Bella's room, and, being the strongest vampire in the Olympic coven physically, he is vital to Jasper's training lessons, where he portrays an example newborn.
Victoria
Victoria is the primary antagonist. She was the mate of James, who was killed by Edward after he attempted to kill Bella. She created Riley and an army of newborns by attacking and turning civilians in Seattle, Washington to help her get her revenge by killing Bella.
Riley Biers
Riley is a secondary antagonist. He was made into a newborn by Victoria in the beginning of Eclipse. He acts solely out of his love and loyalty for Victoria. He attempts to control her newborn army for her.
The Volturi
The Volturi are the clan from Italy. They are considered the vampire authority and are reportedly responsible for explaining the vampire rules to newborns. They are playing behind the scenes as antagonists to the Cullens and their allies.
Jane
One of the most significant members of the Volturi, Jane has the ability to induce a crippling and incapacitating pain in the minds of people. She arrives in Forks after Victoria's newborn army has been defeated.
Sam Uley
Sam is a Quileute tribe member and the Alpha to the La Push wolf pack, named after him as the Uley pack. He is the first to begin shifting into a wolf upon the Cullen's return to Forks, sometime in Twilight, New Moon, or just before. He is the grandson of Levi Uley, and through heritage has the best claim to Alpha, which he offers to the rightful claim Jacob, who turns the position down. He is imprinted (and therefore in a dedicated relationship) with Emily Young.
In Eclipse, Sam's main concern is tracking down and killing Victoria and her allies along with the rest of his pack. He agrees to side with the Cullens to erase their common enemy of Victoria and her newborn army.
Seth Clearwater
Seth is one of the youngest members of the Quileute tribe, and by extension, Sam's pack. He is described as kind-hearted, optimistic, and joyful. He venerates Jacob and seems eager to be a part of something important. He is Bella's reluctant protector when the rest of the pack deems him too young to be a part of the battle. There, he serves as a connection between Bella's camp with Edward and Jacob and the fight in the clearing, through werewolf telepathy.
He is one of the first pack wolves to warm up to the Cullen family and forms a friendship with Edward near the end of the novel.
Quil and Embry
Quil Ateara V and Embry Call are two Quileute teenagers who are part of Sam Uley's pack. They are evidently Jacob's best friends apart from Bella, and often accompany him during confrontations and such. They fight alongside the Cullens during the battle with Victoria.
Renèe Dwyer
Renèe is a minor character and Bella's mother. She remarried and moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Jacksonville, Florida with her new husband, Phil.
Mike Newton
Mike Newton goes to Bella and Edward's school in Forks. He is extremely friendly to Bella and is consistently vying for her attention.
Angela Weber
Angela Weber is a friend of Bella's and a classmate to both Bella and Edward. She is shy yet kind, and part of the protagonists. Bella recalls early in the book that between New Moon and Eclipse, Bella's friends broke into two groups, with Angela leading the group that Bella chooses to stay with. She attends the graduation party at the Cullen's with her boyfriend Ben Cheney.
Jessica Stanley
Jessica Stanley also goes to Forks High with Bella. She is friendly and cheerful. She has a crush on Mike and sometimes resents his attention towards Bella.
Eric Yorkie
Eric is the first student that Bella meets at her new school. He is cheerful and is a friend of Mike and Jessica.
