    Write Your Own Charade

    Kind of Activity:

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will experience Regency entertainment, and explore rhyme schemes.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1

    Structure:

    A charade is a game in which lines of a rhyming poem give hints to a word; by answering each line of the poem, one can guess the whole word the author had in mind. For example, this charade appears in Emma:

    “My first doth affliction denote,
    Which my second is destin’d to feel
    And my whole is the best antidote
    That affliction to soften and heal.”
