Miles Roby
The middle-aged manager of the Empire Grill, Miles is the protagonist of the story. An altruistic, moral character, he struggles to take care of his teenage daughter Tick as well as manage affairs in his personal life with his recently divorced wife.
Janine Roby
Janine is the malicious ex-wife of Miles. After they split up, she developed a selfish, rebellious attitude, causing Miles and her daughter Tick much pain. While she gained custody of the house and their daughter, she does not have nearly a close a relationship with Tick as Miles does, infuriating her. Janine also develops a relationship with the owner of the local fitness center, Walter.
Christina "Tick" Roby
Tick is Miles and Janine's daughter. She is an amicable and intelligent teenage girl who likes art. She has a good relationship with Miles, her father, but despises Janine for her selfishness. She also has a lot of relationship issues; her ex-boyfriend Zack wants to get her back, and she likes a boy named John Voss, who is bullied for his emotional turpitude.
Charles Whiting
Charles was the heir of the Whiting family, the wealthiest family in town who owns practically all the land and establishments. However, he became unhappy with his privileged, yet undeniably confined life, trapped in an arranged marriage and forced to do unsavory duties, and killed himself some 20 years before the story begins.
David Roby
David is Miles' younger brother and a former alcoholic, drug addict/seller, and car crash survivor. However, he is also a talented cook, and is the chief chef at the diner.
