Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox Character List

Mr. Fox

Mr. Fox is the main character of Fantastic Mr. Fox. Even though he is a fox, he has many human characteristics, including wearing human clothes. Mr. Fox understands and speaks many different animal languages. He is also incredibly clever, smarter than most of the human characters in the story. Mr. Fox possesses a genius-level intellect. He uses this intellect to steal food from the nasty farmers. He gives this food to his family and the other animals. Mr. Fox, while kind, can be overly confident though, and this leads to the eventual discovery of his home. When the farmers then try to destroy his home, he again thwarts them and escapes.

Mrs. Fox

Mrs. Fox is married to the protagonist, Mr. Fox. Mrs. Fox is exceedingly kind and loyal to her husband. In fact, she is the one who coined the nickname “Fantastic Mr. Fox” for her husband. She is also the mother of his four children. She is a good mother, and makes sure that her children are always taken care of. Mrs. Fox also cooks all of the food that Mr. Fox poaches from the farmers.

The Small Foxes

In the book, Mr. and Mrs. Fox are parents to four small children, who are referred to collectively as “The Small Foxes.” The four foxes are eager to help their father. They want to assist him in any way that they can. The Small Foxes are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter the danger. They live in the burrow and don’t have that large of a part.

Farmer Boggis

Boggis is one of the antagonists of Fantastic Mr. Fox. He is a chicken farmer and raises thousands of chickens on his farm. Boggis is also incredibly, massively obese. He eats multiple chickens every single day, as well as buckets of dumplings. Mr. Fox steals from him by sneaking into the chicken coops and getting chickens. Boggis is very mean, and will stop at nothing in his single-minded pursuit of Mr. Fox.

Farmer Bunce

Farmer Bunce is another antagonist in Fantastic Mr. Fox. He raises ducks and geese, and keeps thousands on his land. He is overweight, but also a midget. He is described as being around four feet tall. Bunce is rich, and infuriated with Mr. Fox. Bunce is relatively intelligent and tries to trap Mr. Fox in his burrow. Of course, this fails.

Farmer Bean

Farmer Bean is the third antagonist in Fantastic Mr. Fox. He raises turkeys and apples, although he cares more for the apples. Farmer Bean is the smartest of the three farmers, and he comes up with the plan to trap the Fox family. Of course, this plan ultimately backfires. Farmer Bean eats no food. Instead, he subsists solely on gallons of hard apple cider, which he makes himself. This results in Farmer Bean being grotesquely thin.

Badger

Badger is another character who lives under the ground. He and his family are negatively affected by the farmers waiting for Mr. Fox to come out of the hole, so Mr. Fox invites them to the feast he is organizing with the farmers' food.

Rat

Mr. Fox and Badger happen upon Rat in Bean's Secret Cider Cellar. Rat lives in this cellar and drinks Bean's alcoholic cider, making him into a surly and mean-spirited character. He does not want Mr. Fox and Badger to take any of the cider or cause him to be found out.
