This series of photographs from Life Magazine offers a glimpse into car travel in 1960s America—roughly the same period in which Bishop wrote "The Filling Station." In general these photographs focus on tourist destinations, both man-made and natural. But some of them also offer a glimpse into the process of travel itself—road infrastructure, navigation, and necessities like food—looking, as Bishop does, into the less-glamorous sides of car travel.
