Ally is experiencing learning difficulties. She has perfected the art of using distractions in order to conceal her condition. Her mother is a waitress and spends little time with her. Ally’s father is in the military, and this employment has made the family move occasionally. As a result, Ally has studied in various schools. She has a brother called Travis, who also experiences learning difficulties. Mr. Daniel has been posted to Ally’s school. As soon as he starts teaching, he notices strange behavior from Ally. Mr. Daniel discovers that Ally is brilliant but may have dyslexia. He chooses to help her overcome difficulties.
Ally befriends Albert and Keisha. In their class, there is a bully known as Shay. Shay is used to making fun of Ally’s condition. As the friendship between Ally and Albert continues, she learns that Albert comes to school with fresh bruises. Some students are used to beating Albert up, hence the bruises. Keisha persuades Albert to fight back against his bullies, but he refuses. Indeed, Albert does not believe in brutality. One day, Mr. Daniel summons Ally. The two discuss Ally’s condition.
Mr. Daniel tries a number of activities to help Ally. For instance, he teaches her how to play a game of chess. He also uses positive reinforcements to encourage her. For example, Mr. Daniel creates a poetry competition and finally awards Ally. As a show of encouragement, Mr. Daniel teaches his class about famous individuals who are believed to have had dyslexia, such as Henry Ford and Albert Einstein. Eventually, Ally learns that nothing is too difficult for her.
