Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera Book 1) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Tavi

Tavi symbolizes the ability of a person to rise above their weaknesses. Although Tavi does not have the same powers as everyone else, he plays to his own individual strengths, such as his intellect and courage.

Outsider motif

The idea of being an outsider is a key motif in this text. This is particularly true of Tavi, who feels like he isn't properly part of his community.

Bullying motif

Bullying is a key motif of this text, as Tavi is often bullied due to his lack of fury crafting abilities. For example, he is even called a "freak."

Fury Crafting

Fury crafting, which is wielding the elements of nature, is a key aspect of Tavi's culture. The fact he cannot craft furies hinders him a great deal, symbolizing its importance within his culture.

Scholarship

Tavi is given a scholarship to join the Academy. This symbolizes his success, and how he has transgressed all expectations of him, which were previously low due to his inability to craft furies.
