Germinal Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will learn about socialist ideals and the labor movement.

  2. 2

    Students will discuss the role that social establishments—especially patriarchal ones—play in protest and revolt.

  3. 3

    Students will research the history of protest and revolution in France throughout history.

  4. 4

    Students will learn about the style of writing referred to as naturalism, as pioneered by Zola himself.

  5. 5

    Students will discuss questions of "nature versus nurture," and the role that environments and/or genetics play in shaping people's personalities.
