    Jack has a wife and son who are currently living in Memphis, Tennessee. His wife, Della, is African American, and interracial marriages were forbidden by law in most of the United States at the time, so they consider themselves married in the eyes of God instead of the law. Jack longs to be with his family, but anti-miscegenation laws and the way that Della's family disapproves of him make their living together almost impossible.
