The narrator meets Fox, which before that was lying under a tree and licking up the shade. The narrator greets Fox, and she is very surprised at Fox’s absence of fear about a human. The narrator asks Fox, why it does not run away. Fox replies that it heard the narrator’s conversation about foxes and that the news spreads among foxes too.
The narrator asks Fox about the conversation and Fox reminds her of the conversation between the narrator and some lady. The conversation was about foxes. Some lady said that the hunt is good for foxes, but the narrator asked again with surprise for which foxes, because it is very dangerous for them. The lady was very indignant. Fox says that the narrator is good in Fox’s book, as she shows respect to foxes. In response, the narrator claims that foxes and humans have different books.
This is the difference between them. Fox agrees and confirms that the difference between them is that people fuss all the time, think about life and look for its meaning, while foxes just live. The narrator just sighs. Fox does not understand all human attempts to understand life. People fuss, foxes live. Fox slowly gets up, because he is old and leave.
