Phil Connors
Cynical, misanthropic TV weather man who without explanation or cause gets stuck in a time loop in which he must live the same circumstances of February 2 over and over again until he finally achieves redemption.
Rita Hanson
In a sign of what matters most in American, Rita went from studying 19th century French poetry in college to becoming local TV station news producer. She is one of many characters that think they are living Groundhog Day just once every time that Phil wakes up to live it over again. Phil start out mildly contemptuous of Rita, but in getting the chance to know her, he starts to fall for her which makes her the primary mechanism for his redemption.
Larry
Larry is Phil’s cameraman accompanying him to the Groundhog Day ceremony. He does little to facilitate the process of redeeming Phil, but is effective at making Phil look better on occasion.
Ned Ryerson
Ned is the insurance salesman who represents the link to Phil’s past. Ned’s annoying personality ultimately results in violence, but as he nears redemption, Phil even manages to find a way to make human contact with the salesman who never stops shilling.
Buster Green
Buster is a key figure at the Groundhog Day ceremony and that duty defines him. When one his Groundhog Day becomes too much for Phil to bear, he steals the rodent and Buster pleads for the police to aim for Phil rather than take a chance on hitting the groundhog should shooting break out. Phil later saves Buster from choking to death.
