Harold and Maude Irony

Harold and Maude Irony

Shoot Me

Harold shoots himself while his mother goes over a dating questionnaire. Ironically, she doesn't bat an eye as she knows he isn't dead as he has constantly pretended to kill himself for some time now.

Marriage

Harold's mother wants him to get married and even sets him up with several women to date. Ironically, he chooses to marry Maude, a woman on the verge of turning 80, and this baffles and infuriates his mother.

Cliff

Harold is obsessed with death, which we see in his actions across the entire film. Ironically, after Maude's death we see him decide to not go over the edge of the cliff with the car. He's chosen to live.

Crashing

Harold goes to a funeral of someone he doesn't know, believing himself to be the only crasher there. Ironically, Maude is also crashing the funeral. Moreover, she is far more brash and blatantly makes herself known as not being part of the funeral party with her loud voice and way of acting.

Life

Harold is obsessed with death and pretends to kill himself in a manner of different ways. Ironically, he learns to live when he meets Maude, a woman nearing her own death. Their relationship encourages him to give life a chance rather than remaining obsessed with ways to kill himself.
