Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Study Guide

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book in the Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling. In this book, Harry struggles under the heavy responsibility to face the evil Lord Voldemort and save the people he loves most. It is the longest book of the series.

Five million copies were sold during opening weekend. J.K. Rowling’s hard work was published on June 21, 2003 by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, Scholastic in the United States, and Raincoast in Canada. The novel was translated into Vietnamese, Dutch, German, French, and many more languages. Avid fans of the Harry Potter books waited three years between the publication of the fourth and fifth books. Even before the fifth book made its first public appearance, 200 million copies of the first four books had been sold and translated into 55 languages in about 200 countries around the world. Thousands of fans stood in front of bookstores at midnight, the day before the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, to be sure to get their copy of the book.

The novel received several awards, including being named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults in 2003, and received the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio 2004 Gold Medal along with several other awards, and was faced with mostly positive reviews. Rowling was praised for her creative imagination, though a handful of reviews criticized the darker tone and prevalence of violence. However, it still became a part of one of the most well-known and treasured series in the world. Rowling brought a darker, more suspenseful book, with a carefully crafted plot and twist, that has kept children and adults still reading it to this day.
