Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage Character List

Johanna parry

Johanna Parry is the central character of the story. She is a quiet, practical, and emotionally reserved housekeeper who works for Mr McCauley. Johanna is deeply lonely but also resilient and independent. Despite her plain appearance and limited social life, she possesses inner strength and determination. When she begins receiving letters from Ken Boudreau, unaware that they are a prank, she responds sincerely, eventually taking a bold step that will challenge her life. Her character highlights themes of hope, dignity, and unexpected transformation.

Ken Boudreau

Ken Boudreau is a troubled young man with a history of irresponsibility and instability. He is the estranged son of Mr. McCauley and lives a drifting lifestyle, often relying on others for support. Although he initially has no intentions of forming a real relationship with Johanna, he becomes central to her future. His character represents immaturity and disorder, contrasting sharply with Johanna's steadiness.

Sabitha (Sabbie)

Sabitha, often called Sabbie, is Mr. McCauley's granddaughter and one of the girls responsible for the letter-writing pranking. She is imaginative, somewhat rebellious, and influenced by her friend Eith. Although she participates in the deception, she later shows signs of guilt and reflection. Her character illustrates youthful carelessness and the unintended consequences of seemingly harmless actions.

Edith

Edth is Sabbie's friend and the main instigator of the prank. She is bold, manipulative, and enjoys stirring trouble. Edth encourages the writing of the fake romantic letters to Johanna, pretending they are from Ken. Unlike Sabbie, Edith shows little remorse for her actions, representing cruelty and emotional detachment.

Mr. McCauley

Mr. McCauley is an elderly man and Johanna's employer. He is Sabbie's grandfather and Ken's father. Though not involved in the central conflict, he serves as the link between the main characters. His household is the setting where Johanna works and where the pranks begin.
