Head-On Imagery

Head-On Imagery

Headlight

Akin shows a close-up of the headlight on Cahit's car, then the red streak of light on the white tunnel wall he is driving through. Then a close-up of Cahit. The imagery and cuts makes one feel shaky and off-centered, and in combination with a scratchy soundtrack we see that the imagery represents Cahit's emotional state just before he drive head-on into a wall.

Twisted Fairytale

Sibel and Cahit have just been married and on their first night Sibel sleeps with another man after being kicked out by Cahit. The next morning Akin shoots her in a wide shot, with a slight shake to the camera as she crosses a street in her wedding dress early in the morning and with a smile on her face. She believes she has achieved her dream-life, but has not clue that she is living out a twisted fairy tale of a life that will not last or provide peace and love.

Celebration

Cahit has just cut his hands at the bar, and begins to dance upon the stage where the band is playing in front of a packed crowd. Everyone cheers for him as blood stains his hands and arms. No one cares to see if he is okay, they just see it as a display of fun. The imagery shows that he is putting himself in situations where he is not protected by people, instead they celebrate his pain.

Puddle of Blood

Sibel has been beaten, stabbed and left for dead in a cobblestone street. Akin places his camera low on the ground and we see a puddle of blood, hers on the stones and a few meters away she lies, like a puddle herself in the night as the attackers leave her. The imagery evokes a deep sadness at the solitude and misery of dying alone without a name or anyone who loves you to help.
