Clare
Clare is the central character in the novel, and she is depicted as a quiet and focused girl who wants to achieve her academic goals. Clare's parents were high school lovers, but their love did not last long before they divorced. Therefore, Clare is careful not to fall in love with her high school boyfriend, Aidan. However, Clare finds it impossible to ignore Aidan, and they fall in love, but their love is short-lived.
However, the love between Clare and Aidan is shaky because its future is uncertain. The two lovers soon go to different learning institutions in different countries. Aidan comes up with a suggestion that they elope together to a far country to start life as a couple. Clare does not want to because she looks forward to finishing her education. Therefore, Clare and Aidan’s love is short lived.
Stella
Stella is Clare's best friend who is outgoing, adventurous, and fun. Stella influences Clare to attend a Halloween party in their final year of school to have fun and have a full experience of their last year in high school. At the party, Clare meets Aidan, a self-assured young man with an alluring look, and she falls in love with him.
Stella plays a vital role in creating an environment for Clare and Aidan to fall in love. The most interesting thing about Stella is that she knows that Clare will fall in love at first sight when she meets Aidan. Stella and Aidan are friends but not connected by affection. Therefore, Stella wants Clare to meet Aidan and have a good experience together during the party.
Aidan
Aidan is a confident high school boy who knows what he wants in life. Although his parents influenced him to pursue medicine, Aidan is reluctant because he wants to be a musician and entertainer. During the Halloween party, Aidan instantly meets Clare and falls in love with her. Aidan is romantic and manages to convince Clare to kiss him on the first day they meet.
When Aidan realizes that Clare is the kind of a woman he would like to marry in future, he convinces her to accept his proposal. Aidan urges Clare to come up with a plan of escaping together, but Clare insists that they must break up and go different ways to accomplish their academic goals.
Steve
Steve is the new man in the life of Clare's mother. After divorcing her husband, Clare's mother has tried to settle down many times, and she hopes he is the right man for her. However, Clare is unsure if her mother is making the right decision.
Scotty
Scotty is Aidan and Stella's best friend. When Aidan organizes a special date with Clare in a restaurant, Stella spoils. However, Aidan later discovers that Clare invited Stella and Aidan to disrupt the date because she was not ready to fall for Aidan's plan of having a sleepover.
Riley
Riley is Aidan's sister who develops a close friendship with Clare. Riley knows Clare and her brother are in love, but she does not know how it will end. On the last day before Clare leaves the country, she looks for Riley to say goodbye.
