Who is Henry Lee?
Henry Lee is an American of Chinese descent who is also the narrator and the major character of the novel. Through varied employment of style characterized by shifts in the perspective employed, Henry's life both as a child and as an adult is well brought out. During his young years in the United States of America, Lee struggles to come to terms with the reality of life there. Young Lee falls in love with Keiko but the relationship does not quite last and he is disowned by his father for the love and help he has for Keiko.

How does the story that Old Henry shares with his family improve their relationship?
As Old Henry reflects on his life as well as the misgivings of his father, he decides to outdo him by being a good father for his son. As he opens up to his wife Samantha, the bond between the two improves and the family grows much more closer, building a family that he had always wanted. In this way, sharing one’s story as a way of influencing them and building a stronger relationship with them becomes emphasized.

How is love brought out in this novel?
The concept of love is first brought out through the relationship between the Young Henry Lee and Keiko, an American of Japanese descent. After being captivated by Keiko’s beauty, Henry falls in love with her. However, the relationship does not quite work as he is disowned by his father as a result of his attempts to help Keiko. Later, his relationship with Samantha develops as he accepts her and the two build a family together. In this way, love is explored in the work.
