House of Leaves Background

House of Leaves Background

Published in 2000, House of Leaves is the first novel by Mark Z. Danielewski. The book was aa huge success upon release, being translated into multiple other languages. One strange thing that makes the book stand out is its structure, a great example of ergodic literature. The book is also interesting in the way that it is described as both a horror and a love story, being interpreted by many people in a different way.

Born in 1966, Danielewski is best known for House of Leaves. The book had ties to when Danielewski's father died, when he rode to him in a bus. While he was traveling, he barely had any money along with him, but he did have a fancy pen and paper. He wrote a story (a rough draft for House of Leaves), and planned to give it as a gift to his father. However, his father did not want the gift of hard work, instead wanting a more solid job than writing for his son. Danielewski angrily through the rough draft away, but his sister ended up saving it.
