Philanthropist

A person who uses wealth to fund charitable, humanitarian, education or other not-for-profit (to themselves) enterprise.

Indignation

A sense of moral outrage over something

Assimilation

The integration of outside minority cultures into the larger majority

Awakening

An epiphany-like realization of a major transformation in life

Embodiment

The iconic expression of a singular characteristic of a person or idea

Metropolis

A large urban area spanning across a diversity of geographical, ethnic, cultural and economic levels

Tenant

A person who rents space to live or work

Monopolize

Near or complete ownership of an industry or idea by a single enterprise

Swain

A young boyfriend, suitor or lover

Teeming

Swarming with people; heavily attended or packed

Pauperism

The state of being economically deprived

Growler

Literally, a growler is the container in which beer is passed around to be poured into mugs, but here it becomes the author’s metaphorical term for the always lingering presence of alcohol as a moral temptation

Brawny

Big and muscular with the implication that it would be easy for such a person to do harm to another

Prominent

Renowned and established and having a high reputation

Swarthy

Being dark in complexion that is associated with a genetic heritage from along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea

Coolie

A derogatory term once used routinely to describe Chinese (or any Asian) immigrant laborer to America

Tough

Used as a noun to describe a young criminal type on the rise: “the tough eventually reaches the end of his rope”

Exigency

Existing in an emergency state which must be promptly addressed

Firebugs

Slang for an arsonist, used particularly to describe the lucrative criminal enterprise of setting fire to tenements to collect insurance on belongings

Kindred

Sharing a likeness or similarity between two different people or things
