Tub
Tub is one of the main characters in the novel, and he is paranoid and fearful character who constantly frets about himself, especially while taking the brunt of his fellow hunters' jokes. He is always on edge, and worries about how the others would see him, so he lies about his weight issues to hide his embarrassment. Tub doesn't like to take action, but sometimes he is provoked so much that he explodes. For example, Kenny's joke about how he hates Tub after Kenny shoots the dog scares Tub into unnecessary self-defense, and Tub, a passive character, takes action and shoots Kenny.
Tub tries to be friends with Frank, and shows excessive loyalty to him that is mostly unrequited.
Kenny
Kenny, one of the hunters, is drastically different from Tub and starts out as a joking and rather sarcastic bully. He constantly makes fun of Tub for his obesity, even persuading Frank to join him in his jokes.
However, Kenny also hides a lot of information from the other hunters. For example, when Kenny shoots the old dog because the old man told him to, he does not reveal the old man's words to his companions and makes them think that he is pure evil. This causes other people, especially Tub, to view him as threatening, and these actions lead to Tub shooting Kenny. Getting shot changes Kenny's character drastically, and after the incident, a previously arrogant Kenny turns more quiet and passive, possibly due to the agony of the bullet wound.
Frank
Frank, the third main character, takes advantage of both sides of the group- he often switches between being on Tub's side, or on Kenny's side. In this manner, Frank takes the position that he feels would be most beneficial to him, instead of taking the brunt of others' anger by being on the weaker side. For example, Frank often takes part in bullying Tub with Kenny, but as soon as Kenny is weakened by the bullet wound, Frank switches to Tub's side. Frank's selfishness is also displayed through his blatant disregard for his wife and child, who he leaves without a thought to go and pursue the fifteen year old babysitter, Roxanne Brewer.
