I Am Jazz Irony

The paradox of societal perception of transgender

Society is harsh towards transgender people for no apparent reason. Transgender people are not mentally ill or physically disabled but individuals who can make decisions and choose their gender identity path. For instance, Jazz is born a boy, but her brain is girlish, and she does everything feminine. Paradoxically, Jazzy’s society wants her to dress like a boy to preserve her reputation.

The satire of being different

Jazz realizes that she is different when she visits a doctor who reveals that she is transgender. Jazz is discriminated against and told to play with boys at school despite her strong conviction that she is a girl. When the school changes its policies to favor Jazz's interests, some kids call her a boy to discourage her motivation. Paradoxically, being different is fine for Jazz and is a pretty thing that makes her happy.

Jazzy’s parents

At first, Jazzy’s parents are not comfortable with her preference to wear girl’s clothes in public. Ironically, her parent’s strictness changes when doctors tell them that she is transgender. Therefore, Jazzy’s parents allowed her to dress in girl clothes in public and asked the school to accept her as a girl. The change of mind by Jazzy’s parents is paradoxical because it was not expected.
