Imagery of Sound
To appeal the sense of sound to the reader, the author describes the screaming sound produced by Icy when she giggles her fingers in front of her face. This imagery is critical in this context because it helps the reader to imagine the sharp pain that comes across Icy’s eyes. She says, “I screamed, flattering my fingerprints." Due to the intense itching of her eyes, Icy is unable to close her eyelids and she cannot scratch them anymore.
The Imagery of Taste
Gwyn Hyman Rubio describes the taste and flavor of the black coffee consumed by Icy’s grandparents. Out of this portrayal, the reader can have an imaginary feeling of the drink's taste. The author writes, “Matanni drank four cups of her mud-black coffee with a squirt of Essie’s cream. Patanni finished his one cup, black with six tablespoons of sugar, and I drank my milk.”
The Imagery of Sight
Gwyn Hyman Rubio creates a visual image for the reader to see how Icy’s homestead looks like. The author’s picture indicates that Icy’s home is a big homestead with the basic domesticated animals for subsistence. The reader can see that Icy is not coming from a poor background because she can access what many kids of her age cannot access due to poverty. The author writes:
"I was no longer that little girl from Icy Creek Farm-our sixty-acre homestead, replete with two milk cows, a dozen chickens, and Big Fat, the five-hundred-pound sow."
