Describe Hazen. What is he like as a man? As a father?

Hazen Lewis is Patrick’s father. He is a man of few words. Not only does he have few lines in “Little Seeds” but he also generally says few words to Patrick. “His father wore no metal on him—not a watch or belt buckle. He was a man who with his few props had become self-sufficient, as invisible as possible” (18). Hazen works to be as self-reliant as possible, relying little on the world beyond nature to provide his needs. “Hazen Lewis was an abashed man, withdrawn from the world around him, uninterested in the habits of civilization outside his own focus” (15).
