Inferno Background

Inferno Background

Published on May 14, 2013, Inferno is a thrilling mystery written by Dan Brown, starring the protagonist Robert Langdon again, making Inferno the fourth book in that series, along with Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and The Lost Symbol. Immediately following its release, Inferno shot to number one on the NY Times Bestseller List for over ten weeks, and a movie was released in the US in 2016.

The fictional novels that Brown creates are treasure hunts that have a twenty-four hour limit and contain the aforementioned historical components, symbols, and more. However, the books that contain Professor Langdon also include many Christian themes, which become controversial, though Brown constantly states that his books are not anti-Christian and only create debates to instigate further exploration of the readers’ beliefs.

Once again incorporating history, symbols and codes, and art in his novel Inferno, Brown creates an intense and dangerous adversary that works against Professor Langdon. For his part, Langdon works to unravel a riddle and find the answers while referring to the epic poem Dante’s Inferno.
