Why doesn't Virgil offer to help the narrator the minute the two meet? What is Virgil waiting for?

Before Virgil can assist Dantes on his journey, Dantes must acknowledge Virgil and follow his instructions..... thus, get on another path. Until Dantes puts his life in Virgil's hands..... Virgil won't be helping him.
