Integrity Background

Integrity Background

Egil Krogh's Integrity (2007) is a book about the Watergate scandal, which rocked the United States and forced President Richard Nixon to resign. In his book, Krogh examines his role as the lawyer in charge of the group called "the plumbers," who were tasked with infiltrating the campaign headquarters of Nixon's Democratic opponent and stealing information. In his book, Krogh explores how he lost his moral compass and how good men ultimately come to do terrible, illegal things. It is simultaneously a book about Watergate and a book about morality and the consequences of doing immoral things (Krogh ultimately served a stint in prison because of his role in Watergate).

Krogh's book was used as a basis for the HBO series The Whitehouse Plumbers, which covered many of the same beats as Integrity (which was retitled after the 2023 release of the HBO series). As a result of HBO's series, Krogh's book, which had been out of print for quite a while before the release of the HBO series, received renewed interest from the general public. For instance, Kirkus Reviews called the novel "Reflective . . . . A slender but thoughtful memoir by one of the foot soldiers of Watergate."
