Iola Leroy

Iola Leroy Analysis

Iola Leroy or Shadows Uplifted is a social novel written in 1892. The most special thing of the novel is its author. Frances Harper is one of the first African-American women whose novel was published. It is a story about society and women, the social position of black women in American society during and after the period of civil war, their rights, education and family relations.

The main theme of the novel is the struggle against slavery which is the worst thing about America for the characters: “"Slavery," said Mrs. Leroy, "is dead, but the spirit which animated it still lives; and I think that a reckless disregard for human life is more the outgrowth of slavery than any actual hatred of the negro.". the problem of humiliation and supremacy of one nation is not solved and will hardly ever be solved – they consider. But still they will do their best to solve the problem and see all people equal regardless their color of skin.

The other title of the book Shadows Uplifted conveys the idea of the novel: “The shadows have been lifted from all their lives; and peace, like bright dew, has descended upon their paths. Blessed themselves, their lives are a blessing to others”. The author regards slavery and war shadows which were hanging upon American society for a long time and now they believe that finally there is the end of this era and the idyllic life is approaching.

The novel was extremely popular in 1890s-1900s, the period of so called “women era” in America. But it is still of current interest. Iola Leroy became a symbol of black women movements her character inspired and impressed.
