Shults' screenplay came about after the loss of his father to cancer. He was writing about his pain from the relationship with his father from childhood to his death, but creating a fictional narrative based upon his emotional experience which led to the creation of the story [Couch, A. The cast includes Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbot, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Riley Keough and it premiered at The Overlook Film Festival in Oregon.
