James Joyce: Short Stories Summary

The Sisters

The story revolves around the death of a priest, Father Flynn, and his relationship with the narrator, a young boy. The boy used to delivery snuff, a tobacco drug, to the priest and in exchange the priest taught the boy about the Catholic Church. The boy then meets the priest's sisters, Eliza and Fannie. The three of them sit around and discovers the Father’s life and his odd behavior in his later life.

An Encounter

The story revolves around an unnamed narrator and his school friend, Mahony, leaving their school to go to the seashore in order to seek out adventure. On their journey they witness many fun things happening on the shore, but also observe the extreme poverty of people they pass by. They are interrupted by a creepy old man, who brings up topics such as corporal punishment. The two boys agree that the man was unsettling.
