Jemmy Background

Jemmy Background

Jemmy is a children's fictional novel by American writer Jon Hassler. It was published in 1980, making it one of Hassler's earliest works. Hassler also wrote the notable works Staggerford and Dear James.

The novel centers around 17 year old Jemmy, a Native-American girl who is forced to quit school by her alcoholic father after her mother dies in order to care for her younger siblings. On the way back from her last day of school, she is trapped in a ferocious snowstorm, and is rescued by an artist and his wife. The book chronicles how this couple will gradually begin to change Jemmy's worldview, and help her overcome her self-imposed limits.
