A square comb used on horses' manes

A piece of dirt that has been cut out of the ground

A small, poorly-appointed house

journeyman

A skilled laborer who has finished his apprenticeship but does not yet own his own business

paroxysm

A sharp, sudden attack of emotion

poultice

A paste of herbs and other ingredients used to heal injuries

sedition

Incitement to rebellion

sillabubs

A dessert made with whipped cream and sherry. In colonial America, it was common for everyone to drink alcohol regardless of their age. This is why eight-year-old Isannah is served sillabubs at the Afric Queen (and also why Johnny is often shown drinking beer).

Tory

The political party that supports the British monarchy. They believe that “all differences could be settled with time, patience, and respect for government” (79).

Whig

The political party that is against British rule of the colonies. They believe that “taxation without representation is tyranny” (79).
