The Bees and Flies
These little insects are the subjects of "Voices of the Air." In Mansfield's imagination they are the star of the band, for whom the wind and the ocean waves keep a steady accompaniment. Although their voices are tiny, they are given an equal opportunity to be heard by nature.
Mother
Mother is the loving representative of parents everywhere in "A Few Rules for Beginners." She is the strong, comforting force to which babies turn when they are scared or hurt. She doesn't require them to be brave on their own, but offers herself to the babe for support.
The Countrywomen
Subjects of their self-titled poem, these women are somewhat amusing caricatures of self-reliance and strength. They're robust women whose bodies are well-suited to the heavy demands of their rural lives.
