Knight of Cups Irony

Knight of Cups Irony

The Sun

During the scenes which take place after the initial title, we are shown a shot of a card sinking underwater. This representing the light fading away from Rick’s life. Ironically, the card has an image of the sun and the words “the sun” on it. The sun, a mass hot enough to vaporize the Earth completely, is shown drowning in water.

The World

When Rick meets Karen, we see Rick showing interest in her. We see them hanging out and going to different locations. In one scene, Karen mentions that sometimes she thinks she knows more about the world than other people. She states the reason that she used to do drugs which helped her witness the window of truth, making her see the world differently. Ironically, drugs cause the brain to see the world as not what it actually is, bending the imagery of the mind to something other than the truth.

Religious Man

In one scene, we see Karen ask a man whether he is religious, as he has a cross hanging around his neck, to which he answers absolutely. A moment later he mentions that when he sees beautiful women, big cars and lots of money he wants to be a part of it. This is ironic because religions, in general, condemn superfluous lifestyles.

Love Hurts

Rick finds love with Elizabeth. He starts to feel uplifted. We see him asking Elizabeth to run away with him, to stay with him. He feels his suffering might have finally reached an end. Ironically, him finding love which is meant to heal him instead leaves him more broken and wondering whether his suffering with ever ends.
