Mr. Mazzini is the father of the four idiot children and Bertita. He is a young adult from the upper-middle class who does not possess any particular traits. His personality is defined by the relationship he has with his wife: passionate at first and full of resentment later, as a result of the illness of his children.

Berta Ferraz is the mother of the four idiot children and Bertita. She is married to Mr. Mazzini and, like him, represents a young upper-middle-class woman who aspires to a comfortable and trouble-free life. Like her husband, her mood and personality are affected by the suffering of her four children.
