Noblesse de Robe

Nobles of the Robe; French aristocrats whose rank came from their holding certain administrative or judicial posts.

Gendarme

An armed police officer.

Gendarmerie

A group of armed police officers.

Caryatid

A sculpted female figuring serving as an architectural support column. The term derives from Greek: such architectural features were common in ancient Greek temples.

Sinecure

A position requiring little-to-no work, but giving the holder substantial status or financial benefit.

Regicide

The murder of a king.

Grisette

French working-class woman.

Tocsin

Alarm bell or signal.

Fiacre

A type of horse-drawn carriage.

Suborn

To induce someone to commit an illegal act.

Gaol

A jail.

Tilbury

A type of horse-drawn carriage.

Vacillation

Inability to take a stand; moving back and forth between two options.

Ostler

Someone employed to look after horses in an inn.

Assize

County court.

Chivvy

To tell someone repeatedly to do something.

Cuirassier

Calvary heavily equipped with armor and firearms.

Dragoons

A member of any of several cavalry regiments in the British army.

Chilblains

Skin sores or bumps that occur after exposure to very cold temperatures.

Harridans

A strict, bossy, or belligerent old woman.

Tsarina

A Russian queen, wife of the Tsar of Russia.

Coppice

An area of woodland in which trees are cut down for firewood.
