What is the implication of depression based on “AIRPORT GUNMAN “HAD NOTHING TO LIVE FOR”?

In the reporting, Barry summarizes, "PORTLAND,OR: The maintenance worker who fatally shot two people before taking his own life, triggering an eight-hour shut-down of Portland International Airport, suffered from depression following the breakup of his marriage, friends and family said yesterday. Amelio Gonzalez, 37, told a friend he had nothing left to live for after a court decision awarded full custody of his two children, 11, and 7, to his ex-wife, Melinda Gonzalez, three months ago." Depression elicits Gonzalez death instinct. His act of shooting other individuals is a projection of extreme levels of depression. He projects the death instinct to other entities who do not contribute to his marital woes after concluding that living is futile.

Why is the questionnaire used in interrogating Emily and Will mysterious?

Lee asks Emily, "Are you a cat person or a dog person?" Emily responds, "I hate cats. Too sneaky." Similarly, during his interrogation in the first chapter, Will is compelled to answer the question: " Would you describe yourself as more of a dog person or cat person?" Will screams, "Dog…Dog please dog!" The question concerning 'dog or cat' is absolutely mysterious. It demonstrates that the answer would determine whether an individual is an ideal recruit or not.
