Luther Nedeed creates Linden Hills as a community for successful African Americans. He wants to give the community an ideal to work toward in their lives. The people want to succeed so that they can live in the prosperous neighborhood and make it to the richest street in Linden Hills, Tupelo Drive. It is a place where African Americans can settle and feel at peace.

Why do Ruth and Lester look down on the lifestyle of those in Linden Hills?
They see the people of Linden Hills as soulless. They spend their lives to obtain money and belongings. Ruth and Lester want to have passion and meaning in their lives. They feel that the people in Linden Hills have no meaning past their possessions. The people only strive to out do one another so they can move to the richest block in Linden Hills. Ruth and Lester are more concerned with the quality of their lives than the quality of their possessions.

Why do the residents of Tupelo Drive not call the fire department when the Nedeed house is on fire?
The residents strive to live in Tupelo Drive but resent Luther Nedeed. They know that they must have his approval to get to Tupelo Drive, yet they do not like him. Without him, they are free of the oppressive rules they must follow. He is not seen as a kind person, but a person to be feared. That fear leads them to watch in awe as his home burns.
