Liza of Lambeth Summary

Liza of Lambeth Summary

Liza Kemp is a young and beautiful girl who comes from unfortunate circumstances. Being a member of a family of fourteen, with an alcoholic mother, she is surprisingly cheerful and a bright young lady who does not let life weigh her down.

Being from a poor background, Liza works in a factory and makes just enough to survive. One day, as she is being pursued by a group of men, she meets Jim, whom she is attracted to.

Meanwhile, Tom, a young man in love with her, offers for her hand in marriage, which Liza promptly refuses as she does not love him back. Despite this, she agrees to go on an outing with him and her friend, Sally, where she sees Jim again. Here, she learns Jim is married with five children, yet Liza encourages his attention, much to Tom’s dismay.

Liza and Jim maintain a secret relationship, resulting in a sexual relationship between the two. However, their relationship becomes public knowledge and Liza becomes labelled as an indecent woman. She begins to realize that their relationship is not perfect when Jim abuses her when she is late to meet him one day.

After she is involved in a fight with Jim’s wife, Tom takes her away and cares for her. Despite his anger at how she has been behaving, he still wants Liza as his wife, but she refuses, stating that she is bearing Jim’s child. Nonetheless, she soon miscarriages and dies from her wounds, leaving Jim and Tom miserable.
