London Fields Background

London Fields Background

Martin Louis Amis is a contemporary British novelist. Having been inspired by the likes of James Joyce, Amis often deals with the follies of Western capitalist society. His narratives frequently poke fun at such lifestyles in exaggerated form.

One of his most prominent works is London Fields, a novel that revolves around intrigue and murder. The descent of the tone of the comic inflects it with an eclectic and diverse flavour with variations from comedy, to a “dark sense of foreboding”.

The narrator of the story is Samson Young, who is suffering from a writer’s block for about two decades. This work explores a myriad of political themes like that of world instability. It surrounds the sense of panic that has emerged due to a murder and chronicles the events that lead up to that time.
