Originally published serially in Blackwood's Magazine from October 1899 to November 1900, Lord Jim tells the story of a seaman named Jim, who early on faces a difficult choice between abandoning a sinking passenger ship and staying to help. He ultimately decides to abandon ship, an action for which he is publicly censured upon arriving shoreside. The rest of the novel follows Jim as he attempts to rebuild his life and come to terms with what he has done.
Contemporary critics recognize Lord Jim as one of Conrad's greatest works (perhaps behind only Heart of Darkness), and it is consistently ranked as one of the finest English-language novels ever written.
