As Emma's debt gets worse, how do the stakes of the novel increase?
As Emma's financial troubles worsen, the potential risks of her lifestyle become ever greater. For Emma, what's at risk is no longer "felicity, passion, rapture," as is the case earlier in the novel, but also her livelihood and that of her husband. At this point, the novel changes in its orientation from a drama about a frustrated woman's search for happiness to that of the tragic downstream effects of her behavior on herself and those around her.
