In the novel, Maggie by Stephen Crane, Maggie suffers a horrific death. Throughout the novel the reader sees the terrible conditions that each character must live in, as well as the experiences that they go through. Their lives are filled with violence, poverty, alcohol, and much more that influences their decision making skills as well as overall affecting their everyday lives. There is no specific person to blame for Maggie’s death, everyone played a vital role as well as the tenement environment she was surrounded by. Her surrounding environment played the biggest role in regards to her death, simply because she had no choice but to be in the mud puddle town. A combination of characters are responsible for Maggie’s death as well as her surrounding environment. Crane eloquently describes the underlying environment as a sure univiting one. He invests his descriptions with the depiction of poverty and how that comes into play regarding Maggie’s death. The mud puddle town is poor, and filled with violence that Maggie is forced to deal with.
