Malone as a symbol of violence
The author uses the character Malone, to emblem violence in society. Malone is a hardened criminal who kills people without remorse. In the community, many people are not remorseful of their criminal acts at all. When Malone is imprisoned for killing six people, he justifies his actions in his writings. Therefore, Malone represents people in society who kill others to explain their evil motives.
Moll and Lady Pedal
Moll and Lady Pedal are symbols of humanity. The role of a human being is to treat others humanely. Moll and Lady Pedal are kind-hearted women who have dedicated their entire lives to serving others. Moll's religious acts are represented by her devotion to do right and just to others. Lady Pedal also devotes herself to treating people with mental health conditions kindly.
Moll’s death
Moll's death epitomizes the possibility of human replacement. The reader realizes that no matter how good you are at your workplace in this world, you can be replaced anytime. Therefore, it is suitable for people to understand that life will go on even after their departure. When Moll dies, she is replaced by the new nurse called Lemuel to continue executing her hospital duties.
Lemuel
The character, Lemuel, represents greedy for power. Many people want to be robust so that they can control others and do what they want. While in the boat, Lemuel kills the two guards because he wants to own the ship and maintain it. After killing the guards with him, he starts shouting the word 'power' to show that he now controls the world and can do anything he wants.
Lying in bed naked
When Malone is in the mental facility, he lies in the hospital naked, armed with a pencil and a writing paper justifying his evil deeds. Malone's decision to lie naked and explain in writing his evil actions symbolizes the result of sin. Wicked doors will face the brutality of the law and get punished. Despite Malone saying that he is not remorseful for his actions, he has a miserable life without any happiness.
