Cocoa
Cocoa, real name Ophelia, is one of the two protagonists of the love story. Cocoa is a Southern woman living in New York with strong familial connections; she must visit Willow Spring, her ancestral home, every August to spend time with her mother and family. When she meets George and falls in love with him, she takes him back to Willow Springs with her. However, here he finds out that Cocoa is dying from a hex cast by a jealous witch.
George
George is the other protagonist of the story. A practical engineer, he has difficulty accepting the magical forces of Willow Springs, even as they interfere with Cocoa and his life. Unfortunately, because of this inability to accept anything other than the reality he knows, Cocoa suffers a tragic end.
Mama Day
Mama Day is the matriarch of Willow Springs, a clever and funny old lady who uses her magic and intelligence to help the people of Willow Springs thrive. She cares deeply about familial bonds. She watches over Cocoa, often attempting to meddle in her life, wanting to see her happy.
